DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Rye Owner’s Guide

We install DuraFlex chimney caps in Rye every month, and the honest answer is this: a full DuraFlex cap replacement on a typical Rye home runs $285 to $460 installed, parts and labor included. If the cap is the only thing that failed and your flue tiles, crown, and liner are sound, we usually have it handled the same visit we come out to measure. Most Rye owners discover the problem the same way: a rust streak on the chimney, a flapping sound over the roofline on a windy night, or water pooling inside the firebox after a heavy storm.

We’re an independent chimney company. We install and service DuraFlex products but we’re not affiliated with DuraFlex, and we’ll tell you when a less expensive aftermarket cap does the job just as well.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes caps under a few different product lines, and the right match depends on what’s on your chimney right now. The two we see most in Rye are the DuraFlex standard stainless cap with the crimped base, and the slightly taller DuraFlex deluxe model with the larger overhang. Both fit their round and oval liner systems, but the base diameter is the number that matters. Cap sizes run 6, 7, 8, and 9 inches, and the measurement that counts is the outside diameter of the liner, not the inside. That’s the mistake we see again and again: someone orders a 6-inch cap for a 6-inch liner and wonders why it wobbles.

There’s also a real compatibility gotcha with older DuraFlex setups. If your liner dates back before 2005 or so, the original cap collar used a slip-fit design rather than the current twist-lock. You can’t put a new twist-lock cap on an old slip-fit base without an adapter, and some crews will try. We keep those adapters on the truck because Rye has plenty of chimneys from the 80s and 90s and we’d rather fix it right than tell you to go shopping. In our experience, a good aftermarket stainless cap from Gelco or Olympia often fits DuraFlex baseplates fine and can save you $60 to $90 over the OEM mark. We’ll show you both options before we install anything.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. The galvanized base ring on older DuraFlex caps corrodes first where it meets the flue tile. Once rust starts streaking, the base is usually too far gone to save.
  • Water collecting in the firebox after rain. This usually means the cap’s hood has warped or the screen has torn, and water is running straight down the flue instead of being shed away.
  • A rattling or flapping sound in high wind. The rivets on the cap’s legs or collar can wallow out after years of nor’easters. The cap may still look fine from the ground, but it’s loose up top.
  • Animal noise from the chimney. A torn or missing screen is an open door for squirrels and birds. We’ve pulled nests out of Rye flues that were built in under a month.
  • Visible debris inside the firebox. Leaves, twigs, and small stones inside the firebox after a storm point to a failed cap screen or hood. Whatever’s falling in isn’t supposed to be there.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Rye homeowners, a DuraFlex cap replacement with us typically lands between $285 and $460. The spread comes down to three things: the cap size and style, whether the existing base ring can be reused or needs a full pull-and-replace, and how much your roof pitch complicates the ladder work. Rye’s older colonials with steep slate roofs take longer and cost more than a straight two-story with an easy ridge line. We tell you the number before the truck moves, and the price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice. No surprises at the door.

What’s Included Price Range
Standard DuraFlex or equivalent stainless cap, 6-8 inch $165-$230
Labor, roof access, removal of old cap, sealant and fastener replacement $90-$150
Optional: new base plate or adapter for older DuraFlex slip-fit systems $30-$80

Every cap we install carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the cap works loose, leaks, or we missed a fit issue, one call brings Wendell and the crew back at no charge. That’s on top of the manufacturer’s warranty, and we don’t hide behind either one.

DIY or Call Us?

I’ll give you the straight answer, because that’s how we do things here. If your DuraFlex cap is simply loose and you’re comfortable on a roof, you can check the fasteners and tighten things up yourself. But most Rye cap failures need a full replacement, and that means working at height on a pitched roof, usually with a ladder on uneven ground. Falling from a roof is not worth saving $150. We’ve also seen plenty of DIY installs where the cap was the wrong size on arrival, or the sealant was slathered on so thick it blocked the flue’s draft entirely.

If the flue’s clear and the cap’s solid, I’ll tell you to save your money. Simple as that. But if the cap is cracked, rusted through, or sized wrong, call us at (914) 685-6096. Wendell or one of the crew will come out, measure it right, and you’ll know the honest number before any work starts.
