• The handle spins without resistance. The connecting rod or cable has snapped where it meets the damper plate. The damper itself may still be in place, but you can’t open or close it predictably.
• You feel a cold draft from the fireplace when there’s no fire. The damper plate isn’t seating flush against its frame. Warping or a corroded edge is letting air slip through.
• Smoke backs into the room on the first burn. A damper that won’t open fully, or one stuck in a partially closed position, changes the flue draft and pushes smoke into the living space instead of up the chimney.
