Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The Rye Owner’s Guide

A Famco damper repair in Rye typically runs $185 to $410 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the cable assembly, re-seating the frame, or swapping in a new damper plate. We stock Famco-compatible repair parts on the truck, and most Rye jobs are done in a single visit. Where owners usually discover the problem is the first cold night of October, when the damper won’t close, won’t open, or rattles every time the wind picks up off Long Island Sound.

Famco dampers are solid gear, but the parts that move are the parts that wear. The cable stretches, the pivot plate corrodes, and after twenty years of coastal air the cast iron frame can warp just enough to make the plate bind. We’ve repaired enough of them in Rye’s older homes near Milton Point and along the Boston Post Road corridor to know exactly what gives out first.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco has built chimney dampers for decades, and the repair work we do in Rye covers the brand’s three most common lines: the Famco Top Damper series (cable-operated, mounts at the flue top), the Famco Cast Iron Throat Damper (the classic poker-style or rotary-control damper in the firebox), and the Famco Energy Top line. Each has its own failure pattern and its own repair kit.

The quickest way to identify what you have is to look for the Famco stamp on the damper frame or the control handle. Top damper units will have a cable running up the flue to a spring-loaded cap at the crown. Throat dampers are the cast iron plate you can see when you look up from the firebox. If the stamp is worn off, we measure the flue opening and match the damper size, Famco units come in standard sizes from 8×8 to 13×18 on the throat style, and 6 to 13 inch round for top-mount units.

One thing worth knowing before you order parts online: Famco’s older square-frame throat dampers from the 1990s don’t accept today’s OEM replacement plates without a frame shim. We carry the shim kits because we’ve been burned by that mismatch before. Quality aftermarket plates do exist, but for Famco specifically we’ve found the OEM plate lasts longer because the pivot dimensions are exact. Aftermarket plates can wobble, and a wobbling damper plate is how you end up with a warped frame.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle won’t stay in position. On rotary-control throat dampers, a worn gear or stripped valve plate means the damper drifts open on its own. That’s usually a $40 gear kit, not a new damper, even though some outfits will quote the whole assembly.
  • The cable feels loose or doesn’t pull the damper closed. On top-mount Famco units, the stainless cable stretches over time. It can also jump the pulley at the mounting bracket. Sometimes adjusting the cable tension fixes it; sometimes the cable needs replacing.
  • You hear a rattle or metallic scraping when the wind gusts. In Rye’s exposed neighborhoods near the water, wind finds loose damper plates and makes them sing. The culprit is almost always worn pivot pins or a missing spring clip.
  • Cold air pours down the chimney even with the damper “closed.” A warped plate or deteriorated gasket leaves a gap. In a Rye winter, that gap is a direct line for heating dollars to head up the flue.
  • Visible rust or flaking on the damper frame. Older Famco cast iron frames weren’t porcelain-coated like today’s models. Once rust starts in the frame channel, the plate binds, and forcing the handle snaps the linkage.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Rye, and the number you get on the phone is the number on the invoice:

  • Cable and pulley repair (top damper): $185-$260
  • Gear kit and handle rebuild (throat damper): $120-$190
  • Full damper plate replacement (throat): $240-$340
  • Complete top damper unit replacement: $320-$410

The range depends on roof access, the condition of the framing around the damper, and whether we’re matching an odd size from Famco’s older catalog. Every quote includes the part, labor, cleanup, and a photo report from our inspection camera. The work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, and we also honor the $40 off any repair over $200 standing offer, plus 10% off always for seniors and veterans in Rye.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things on a Famco damper without ever climbing on the roof. Look up from the firebox with a flashlight and check for obvious rust, a plate that’s visibly crooked, or a cable that’s slack. If the handle spins freely with no resistance, the linkage has let go. Those observations help us diagnose over the phone.

The actual repair is where we’d rather you stop. Top damper work means getting on the roof, which is a different conversation. Throat damper work means working inside the firebox with cast iron parts under tension, the linkage spring can fire back if you don’t know where it’s seated. Wendell Pike and the crew have been doing this long enough to do it right without transforming your firebox into a puzzle of parts. Call (914) 685-6096 and we’ll get it sorted.
